Things to do in Cartagena

What to Do When in Cartagena

Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities in South America, and is a popular tourist destination for many people from around the world. There are so many things to do, places to visit, foods to try, and entertainments to enjoy when in Cartagena, and it can be nearly impossible to know what to do in the short amount of time that you are in the city. Here is a list of some of the best things for you to do when in Cartagena:

  • Pay a visit to El Convento de La Popa, a 400 year old historic site that was once a place for demon worship and paganism. Lawrence Washington, the brother of U.S. President George Washington, stayed in the Convento de la Popa during the Siege of Cartagena. It has been remodeled in the last 50 years to be a shrine commemorating the visit of the Pope to Cartagena during the 1980's. The breathtaking views offered by the Convento are magnificent, and you can see a 360 degree panorama of Cartagena.

  • Spend time in the baths at the Volcan de Totumo, which is the world's tallest volcano of mud.

  • The Teatro Heredia is the creation of Luis Felipe Jaspe, and is one of the most beautiful Convention Centers in the world. The interior of the Teatro Heredia is ornamented with gold leafwork, and the stage curtain is unique to Cartagena. There are a number of presentations made by a ballet company native to Cartagena, and they are worth spending the time and money to enable you to go see them perform.

  • The Corralejas, is an important event in Cartagena, and should not be missed. It may be difficult for those with weak stomachs to watch, and, though the bulls are not actually killed, it can still be a strong spectacle for the squeamish. You can easily locate the enormous bull ring, and you can spend all day watching the spectacles.

  • BocaChica is the site of an ancient Spanish fort, and you should pay a visit to this amazing structure. The moat surrounding the fort is still intact, and the myriad of tunnels running through the entire fort are filled with bats. It is an amazing historical site, and you can see the massive water chain that blockaded the harbor against enemy ships.

  • The Cathedral de San Pedro Claver was built in 1575, and was rebuilt in 1586 after it was partially destroyed by Sir Francis Drake. The cathedral is named after a Jesuit priest who ministered to and baptized thousands of slaves brought over from Africa.

  • The Palacio de la Inquisicion is a monument to the cruelty of the Spanish Inquisition, and you will be terrified as you walk through the halls of the massive building. There are a number of exhibits from Indigenous and Colonial times, as well as Post-Colonial era displays. On display you can find the tools of torture used by the Spanish Inquisition, and the Cartagena Historical Archives are also housed in the Palacio de la Inquisicion. As you can see, there are so many things to do in Cartagena Colombia!

To have a great stay, there is nothing like staying in a Cartagena apartment. The Apartments in Cartagena have a magnificent location near the attractions of the city.
